A Protosynth is an early-stage test style used in the preproduction phase of shell development. Never meant for public use, Runners have taken to stealing Protosynth schemas for private [read: illegal] printing. The functional simplicity of the style is another way for Runners to subvert UESC attempts at identifying and tracking an individual or crew as the style itself has no direct connection with any one group or run strategy. Beyond its strategic value, many Runners simply favor the uniqueness of its trimmed-back aesthetic, viewing Protosynths as the perfect visualization of a shell as the metaphorical scaffolding onto which their conscious mind is grafted—a work in progress, to be tested against countless variables until proven or discarded.
