FIELD OBSERVATION [0000346.2]:
Everything remains speculative as we're still scratching the surface of what the Anomaly is:

• Its point of origin [subterranean, but undefined]
• Why it's here and the state of it [seemingly dormant but passively active]
• How colony leadership and Sci-Comm discovered and engaged with it in the first place

These are a few of the core concerns we are exploring as we ascertain next best steps.

Protocol dictates we start with the basics, but we are not helped by the fact we were entirely unprepared for an investigation of this type. The original Marathon mission had decades of focused planning to consider all the complications they may face on their journey and throughout settling the Tau Ceti system. Decades, plus centuries, and they never came close to establishing contingencies for post-physics investigations in any of their speculative discovery or threat assessments. Can't blame them for being unprepared; it's an impossible task to consider every version of the impossible. Still, at this early stage of investigation, it appears that they did their best with what knowledge, tools, and tech they had available to them, especially when noting the apparent complications with their planetary and shipboard support intelligences.

All that time, and the end result is an abandoned colony, corrupted systems, and endless unknowns. By comparison, we had the blink of an eye to prep and consider our objectives in reaching and contacting whatever remained of the colony or its systems. Our focus was—and remains until further notice—rescue, security, and retention of proprietary and intel, tech, and science. Our focus was on assumptions based on historical evidence related to lost contact events across Sol, not on the sudden and overt disruption of our understanding of the natural world.

Luckily, from a science and research standpoint, we are adaptable and eager to explore all possibility spaces. Starting with our current best guess at what we believe is the colony's most direct and focused effort to examine the Anomaly: the Ag-Hub surface breach phenomenon, which, to this point, represents the most obvious point of contact between the colony and the Anomaly proper.
